Milk – from the cow to the freezer

During our return visit to Kazungula in the second week of March 2019, we not only visited the livestock farmers, but also took a look at the journey of the raw milk from the cow to the freezer in the sales room.

Our commitment in Zambia this year focuses on the procurement of an urgently needed pasteurization plant for the agricultural cooperative in Kazungula. In addition, dairy farmers receive support and advice on livestock farming in order to produce more milk. Furthermore, transport routes and times must be optimized. Based on the number of inhabitants, Kazungula would need more than 1,000 liters of milk a day. Under the current conditions, the cooperative only produces a fraction of this. The nearest supermarket is in Livingstone, 70 km away, out of reach for many of the inhabitants.

The following photos from March 2019 illustrate the purely manual work process from milking, heating and subsequent cooling to the sale of the milk.

There is no more obvious way to show how much support is still needed here. Zambesi Health will help to set up the cooperative in terms of technology and personnel so that it will be able to pasteurize milk professionally in the future and keep it packaged for sale. Please support us in this.
