The Zambian media is reporting an acute outbreak of cholera in some suburbs of Lusaka (Kanyama Township, John Laing and George compound) and other towns. According to Lusakatimes, there have been almost 3,000 cases of cholera since last fall to date (20.01.2018), and more than 60 people have died. Markets and schools were closed. Church services are to be dispensed with. The schools will not open until 22.01. open again late for the start of the school year.
Zambesi Health has set itself the goal of helping to prevent communicable diseases. This can only be achieved if basic hygiene standards are taught and observed. This is where we started with the construction of Tippy Taps and the project to improve hygiene in milk production and processing in Kazungula.
As part of our training event for decision-makers and at our two-day workshop for local farmers and livestock keepers in August 2017, we also showed the video “The Story of Cholera” produced by Global Health Media. The instructions for preparing the drinking solution for rehydration and the easy-to-implement hygiene recommendations are very helpful.
We can only hope that the measures introduced by the Zambian government will soon have the desired effect and quickly contain the cholera outbreak.
